The Shops - A5 Original
Some places don't need a name on the door to be instantly familiar. This original urban sketch — inspired by the spirit of Sunderland's Pennywell shops rather than a precise record of them — captures the particular energy of a neighbourhood high street going about its day. A long run of golden-ochre Victorian facades stretches across the composition, their upper windows rendered in loose dabs of blue, the roofline busy with chimney stacks and wiring. Below, shopfronts break into splashes of pink and peach, their signage suggested rather than spelled out, and canvas awnings angle out over the pavement where figures pause, chat, and move on — a woman in yellow, another in red, a dog pulling at its lead. A red phone box anchors the middle ground with a jolt of warm rust, and a tall street lamp divides the sky with the unhurried presence of something that has stood there for decades. The foreground opens into a wide sweep of blue-grey pavement shadow, giving the whole scene room to breathe. It is not a portrait of one specific street so much as a feeling — the ordinary, unheroic life of a community that carries on regardless, caught in ink and colour before the moment passes.
