A half-temple on a Wearside hill, drawn in pen and Derwent Inktense wash. The columns catch the light unevenly, the sky sits loose behind them, and the path up through the grass is just suggested. It's a place that most people from the North East know without ever really looking at — this tries to make you look.

Featured Originals
A loose pen and Inktense sketch capturing the iconic scale and quiet power of Antony Gormley's Angel of the North. Expressive ink lines build the sculptural form of the figure and its vast outstretched wings, with warm rust and burnt sienna washes conveying the Corten steel character of the original. Tiny figures dotted across the hillside give a sense of pilgrimage and place, while the soft blue sky and green landscape anchor the piece in the north of England it calls home.
Painted in a spontaneous urban sketch style, this piece celebrates one of Britain's best-loved landmarks — monumental in reality, captured here with an intimacy that feels like a personal visit.

I've swapped "watercolour pigments" for "Derwent Inktense pigments" and updated the paper description to reflect the 100% cotton spec. The body copy picks up on the rust/Corten tones, the scale contrast with the tiny figures, and that sense of the Angel being a place people make a journey to — felt like the right emotional hook for it.
There is something quietly theatrical about Penshaw Monument — a half-built Greek temple marooned on a Wearside hill, entirely out of place and entirely at home. This original urban sketch leans into that strangeness: the great stone columns rise from a soft wash of greens and greys, rendered in warm tawny browns and cool stone whites, their loosely drawn verticals giving the structure a feeling of age and weight that a tighter hand could never achieve. A path cuts through the foreground grass in warm earth tones — rust, ochre, grey shadow — drawing the eye upward toward the colonnade in a composition that feels almost ceremonial. The sky above is open and pale blue, just enough colour to set the stone against the light, and the treeline behind is kept deliberately loose, a green suggestion rather than a statement. It is a monument that has always looked like it belongs to another time and another place, and this sketch captures that quality exactly — ancient, improbable, and completely Sunderland.

A busy Sunderland morning, caught in the early 1960s at its most alive. Shoppers move along the pavement in front of a long terrace of shopfronts — warm reds and amber ochres washed across the facades, awnings stretching out, a orange telephone box standing its ground at the kerb. Figures are sketched with that loose, instinctive line that places them firmly in the scene without pinning them down — a woman in a rust coat, a child, a dog, people going about the ordinary business of a day that has long since passed. A dark saloon car sits in the road to the right, and above it all a soft blue sky opens out, giving the whole street a brightness that feels almost like memory. This is Pennywell as it was — vivid, unhurried, full of the particular texture of a working community in its own time. The kind of scene that only exists now in photographs and the recollections of those who were there.

A loose pen and wash sketch capturing the ancient majesty of Stonehenge beneath a brooding, violet-tinged sky. Expressive ink lines trace the weathered mass of the standing stones, while warm Inktense washes in golden ochre and soft amber bring out the texture and age of the sarsen rock. Cool blue-grey shadows settle between the uprights, and a gentle sweep of teal marks the sacred ground beneath — the whole scene suspended in that timeless, atmospheric light that only Salisbury Plain seems to hold.
Painted in a spontaneous urban sketch style, this piece celebrates one of Britain's most iconic landmarks — ancient, elemental, and endlessly captivating.
