London Bus (No 73) - A5 Original
An urban sketch full of life and motion, capturing one of London's most recognisable sights — the red double-decker rolling past the Houses of Parliament with all the unhurried confidence of a city that knows exactly what it is. The No. 73 fills the foreground in bold crimson washes, passengers glimpsed through loose ink lines in the windows above, while the Gothic spires and warm ochre stonework of Westminster dissolve into a soft, open sky of pale blue and white behind it. Figures move along the pavement in the middle distance — suggested rather than stated, present but fleeting — and Big Ben's clock tower anchors the whole composition with a quiet, familiar authority. There is spontaneity here, the marks made fast and with conviction, the colour laid in with the kind of directness that only comes from sketching in the moment. Not a postcard and not a portrait — something closer to a feeling. The particular electricity of London on an ordinary afternoon.
