About Stephen Darling

I'm Stephen Darling, a watercolour artist based in the North East of England — and painting, for me, started as a way to unwind.

Like many people, I carried vivid memories of growing up in the North East. Trips into town, the smell of department stores, familiar streets and shopfronts that felt like they'd always be there. When those places started disappearing — Binns, Joplings, the shops and landmarks that defined our childhoods — something felt lost.

Around the same time, a medical condition affecting my eyesight made traditional, detailed painting increasingly difficult. That's when I discovered the loose line and wash style — expressive, free, and forgiving. It turned out to be the perfect fit. I didn't need to be precise or perfect. I just needed to capture the feeling of a place.

So I started painting the North East as it was. The old stores, the forgotten streets, the buildings that live on only in memory. And something unexpected happened — people began to recognise them. They'd reach out to say "my mum worked there" or "I used to go there every Saturday as a kid." They started asking me to paint places that meant something to them.

That's what keeps me painting. Not perfection — but connection. Every piece is a small act of remembrance for the places and the people who loved them.
